Healing Our Hurt Places Bible Study Day four

Today’s scripture lesson comes from Psalms 121.  It is one of the fifteen Psalms of Ascent.  Scholars differ about how these Psalms were used.  Some believe that the Levite singers sang them as they climbed the fifteen steps in the Temple.  Others believe that pilgrims coming into Jerusalem for one of the three pilgrimage festivals sang these songs during their journey.

In Biblical days, Jewish men were required to return to Jerusalem for the three pilgrimage festivals of Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles.  During these holidays, they traveled from all over the world to make their way back to their ancestral home.  En route, they faced many dangers; at times they had to navigate bad weather, wild animals, and perilous situations.  Yet, even facing a multitude of dangers, many believe that the travelers confidently sang Psalms 121.  The first line asks, “Where does my help come from?”  The next line answers the question by stating, “My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth” (Psalms 121: 1-2 summarized).

Psalms 121, packed full of Biblical truths, offers much encouragement in difficult times. My favorite part of Psalms 121 comes from verses 3 and 4.  In those verses, the scriptures state, “He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.  Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.”

Whatever situation you find yourself in today, rest in the fact that God is your helper and healer.  No matter what perilous path you find yourself walking, God does not slumber or sleep; he is always awake protecting, healing, and working things out for your good.  I encourage you to meditate on this truth today.

  1. Robin,
I am really enjoying this bible study. Very good idea. It really helps. Alot of times we read scriptures and try to understand the meaning behind them. This really helps with that. Alot of people and myself included have taken scripture and made it what they want it to mean. Thank you and great job!!
